I had stayed up late the night before to iron each outfit, line up each child’s shoes with its respective socks (tights for the girls), pick out hair bows, get out coats with hats (it was supposed to only be 30 degrees that morning!); anything I could do to ensure everything was ready to go, I did. I desperately wanted to avoid any frantic searches in the morning!
The first delay of the morning—and now looking back a very clear sign something was awry—happened just as we were walking out the door. Lucas announced that he had to use the restroom. Right away. This was not completely out of place for him, so I wasn’t overly concerned. In the meantime, Rudy helped get the girls in the van.
After
It was then we noticed that our gas gauge was below empty!

We made a quick pit stop, which cost us an additional five minutes, clocking in our total-minutes-behind-scheduled-time-to-leave to a whopping fifteen and dangerously close to twenty.
As we approached the highway, I felt my heart rate quickly elevating as I panicked over the fact that we might be late! Slowly, it returned to its normal rate when I realized there was little traffic heading into DC that morning. I put the finishing touches on my makeup and sat back to take in the beauty of the early morning sunshine; as we drove over the Potomac into DC, each ray of light seemed to dance across the water.
Then suddenly, there was a commotion from the back of the van: Lucas’s side to be exact. I was oblivious to what had actually taken place until Rudy shouted, “Oh NO! He just threw up!!!”
What?!?!
At this point we could see the Lincoln Memorial! And then—as if on cue—my phone rang.
It was the photographer.
My first thought was that he would never believe this! I answered the phone and proceeded to tell him what had just happened; my voice quivered as I explained to him our unusual predicament. I mentioned that we were certain we could not proceed with the appointment. Not only did I fail to bring a change of clothes for Lucas, I did not want to risk him getting sick again during the photo shoot. We both agreed the best option was to reschedule and he admitted our situation was the first of its kind for his photography business. {Leave it to our family to set such a record!}
Sadly, our photos were not able to be taken on that beautiful, sunny morning in November.
While at the time it was rather disheartening and extremely frustrating, thankfully it worked out that we were able to reschedule them for two weeks later. The day was equally beautiful, no one threw up (I brought changes of clothes for each child—just in case!), the pictures turned out better than I could have hoped, and we had them in time to send out in our Christmas card!
Although our first attempt was a fiasco, in the end we had a lot of fun!
{Below are several photos from the successful shoot…}
I want to thank Milton Yang Photography for taking such wonderful photos of us! {If you can, you should take a moment to check out his site.}
I’m curious to know…have any of you had similar fiascos? {I know it can’t be just us!!} If so, what was the end result?

These are extraordinaire!! SO glad the final shoot was a success! God bless!
