My review of the book, A Different Dream for My Child:
Three years ago my mom handed me a book she had picked up at the local Christian bookstore.
The book, A Different Dream for My Child, contains meditations for the parents of critically or chronically ill children.
Author Jolene Philo (who I had the opportunity to meet this past spring) openly shares of her personal doubts and struggles related to her son’s life-threatening birth defect and the numerous surgeries and hospitalizations which followed. As she shares her story she consistently points to the hope and strength found only in God.
The book is divided into easy to digest sections with each chapter only a few pages long, providing parents whose hours are consumed with caring for or visiting their child manageable opportunities to read. My heart was blessed with the Scripture she shared at each chapter’s opening, and I was encouraged to read through each written prayer pertaining to the unique struggles parents of critically or chronically children face.
My mom gave me the book five years after Cami’s six month NICU stay (the book wasn’t published until 2009—Cami was hospitalized in 2004), yet the book encouraged me tremendously in my day to day struggles of caring for a child with special needs.
I found myself wishing I could've read it sooner.
There is no question this book provides hope-filled encouragement, comforting every parent whose dream for their child turned out differently from what they’d imagined.
