This Journey Our Life

a poem for my micro-preemie baby {Five Minute Friday}

On Fridays I link up with Lisa-Jo and a community of over 200 others who write for five minutes flat. “Not for comments or traffic or anyone else’s agenda. But for pure love of the written word. For joy at the sound of syllables, sentences and paragraphs all strung together by the voice of the speaker.”  (Lisa-Jo Baker)

For today’s Five Minute Friday, my words poured out as a poem expressing some of the emotions I felt during Cami’s NICU stay.

I gaze beyond the glassy wall
That separates us still
Longing only to bring you home
I tell you, “Someday I will”
Deep inside I know
You must grow and learn to breathe
But with every goodbye I whisper
It aches even more to leave
From the very first moment we loved you,
Even before we ever met
But when we laid our eyes upon you
Our words cannot express
You came earlier than we expected
As a tiny, fragile gift
There was happiness and sorrow
Every emotion we felt—mixed
The road ahead seems long
Known only to God above
But He gave you to us and He’ll protect
Precious baby, our beloved.
